HISTORY - Then and NOW Compare and contrast items from the past to items used today. Students toured the museum learning how people in Lowell lived in various eras comparing them to modern life. LOTS OF FUN with FRIENDS! Learning all about HISTORY- How did Grandma's trunk arrive in Lowell and what was needed to start a home in Michigan?
The life of a pioneer is taught through describing different chores which take place on a different day during the week. Sung to the tune of Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush the kids learn... ‘This is the way we wash the clothes, wash the clothes, wash the clothes. This is the way we wash the clothes every Monday morning.’ In addition to washing clothes the kids learn about ironing, mending, churning, cleaning, and baking. Learning about WATER and all of the AMAZING things it gives us! Water is ESSENTIAL for many reasons and we can't make more!
WHO Polluted the RIVER? There was a demonstration to see what happened A lot of water pollution comes from human activity. Some human causes include sewage, pesticides and fertilizers from farms, waste water and chemicals from factories, silt from construction sites, and trash from people littering. We watched this all happened in a ten gallon fish tank. We said we wouldn't want to drink it, swim in it or even let animals! Time to CELEBRATE...
our WRITING as we learned that we can take anything we know a lot about—soccer, school, cats, dogs—and write in ways that teach our readers about the topic. This unit helped us feel that puffed-up pride of being an expert and tapped into the eagerness to show and tell. Usually about 40 gallons of sap are required to produce ONE GALLON of finished maple syrup! We had a FUN FILLED day with lots of activities! We learned the History of Valentine's Day with some CLOZE reading. We sorted nouns and adjectives which were all the word VALENTINE used in a variety of ways. We sorted Candy Conversation Hearts by color- Graphed and Tallied them. Then the challenging part came- we answered many questions using FRACTIONS! We also used them to measure. Our ICE CREAM floats were a favorite and of course opening our valentines was fun too! I was SO BUSY I wasn't able to take many pictures! HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! We made REINDEER Headbands!
We also made Reindeer Cookies with graham crackers by spreading chocolate frosting on them and decorating with pretzel antlers, eyes and nose. We made MAGIC Reindeer food to sprinkle on your lawns/yard on Christmas Eve. Lastly, we made Reindeer Munch to eat during our movie in the afternoon. This was a GREAT LAST day spent together before some HOME with FAMILY! In second grade, children move from a “little-kid” focus on print to a “big-kid” focus on meaning. Our second unit, Second-Grade Reading Growth Spurt, teaches children to take charge of their reading, drawing on everything they know to figure out hard words, understand author’s craft, and build big ideas about the books they read. We ended our unit with a READING CELEBRATION by doing several things:
