We spent a GREAT DEAL of time learning about JUST RIGHT books... 1- The book is new to me. 2- It looks interesting. 3- I understand what it happening in most of the story. 4- I can retell what I have read. (SEE MORE about this BELOW) 5. I recognize most of the words on the page. 6- I can read the book by myself, but may need some help. WE learned about what our teacher wants to know when she wants a RETELL from me! We start by telling who the CHARACTERS were and WHERE and WHEN the story took place (the SETTING). Then we talk about the BEGINNING, MIDDLE, and ENDING (the EVENTS), making sure we talk about about the PROBLEM and the SOLUTION! Later, in 2nd grade, I will be given ONE MINUTE to retell an excerpt that I have read! This is often VERY HARD, so it is GREAT to practice this skill at HOME! Accelerated Reader books will come home on FRIDAYS. This is the MOST IMPORTANT homework. Your child should read EVERYDAY for at least 10 minutes (out loud to you for 5 minutes). Ask your child to retell part or all of the story to you! This is a GREAT WAY to check comprehension. Your child should TAKE ONE TEST MINIMALLY PER WEEK. HELP HARRY! Harry is a puffball. Actually 5 puffballs... He needs a new "perch" so that he can see out over the class more safely. They worked in teams with materials to build a "perch" for Harry. The supplies were: pipe cleaners 12 inches of tape two muffin liners a piece of aluminum foil two index cards The TIME LIMIT: 5 minutes to DESIGN 15 minutes to BUILD THEN we looked at each other's.... and we were given 8 MORE MINUTES to redesign!!!!! This was a great team building activity where we had to be open to talking and receptive to giving and getting help! We also had to work on sticking to a schedule... challenging for 2nd graders! Cooperating was also difficult for some! MATH STATIONS |
