School started on August 22 which seemed early, but the kids were ready to go! We've had a busy week and have learned so MUCH! We have acclimated to a NEW, BIGGER building.
We are learning about what it's like to be a CHERRY CREEK CHAMP. This month we are focusing on what KINDNESS is and how we can show KINDNESS. WELCOME OUR NEWEST 2nd GRADERS!
On the 1st Day of School we read First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg.
We talked all about the word "jitters." We discussed how even teachers get nervous...EVEN Mrs. Anderson!! Later, after recess and gym class, we had JITTER JUICE. The kids had fun guessing what that was...Mountain Dew, Sprite with food coloring, NOPE... everyone was wrong... MY SECRET! Shhh....... (no gooogling!)
This week for READING we talked about choosing "GOOD FIT" books by reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We use the terms TOO EASY, JUST RIGHT, and TOO HARD. We want to become better readers and if we are reading books that are TOO EASY or TOO HARD then we won't become better readers. We have to make sure we chose JUST RIGHT books.
We also learned the acronym "I-PICK" and what it stands for: I: I chose my books, not you P: Purpose: why do I read I: Interest: do I like it C: Comprehend: Do I understand K: Know: Do I know most of the words We learned a song and dance to go along with this and MOST of the kids went along with it but some were "too cool" for it!! We've also been discussing STORY ELEMENTS also! I've introduced our CAFE Menu and what it's all about! CAFE stands for C: Comprehension: I understand what I read. A: Accuracy: I can read the words. F: Fluency: I can read accurately, with expression and understand what I read. E: Expand Vocabulary: I know, find and use interesting words.

In MATH, we've had some assessments so I can figure out how to group students. We run a format that is like this:
Daily Math Warm Up: 10-15 minutes Mini Lesson: 10 minutes B.U.I.L.D. Stations: 40 minutes (they don't get through all stations) B: Buddy Games U: Using Manipulatives I: Independent Work (from the mini lesson) L: Learning From Mrs. Anderson D: Doing Math with Technology
