PLANT PARTS CHANT!!!! Root, root...root, root, root! The ROOT holds the plant into the ground. It gathers up water from all around. Root, root...root, root, root! Stem, stem...stem, stem, stem! The STEM is like and elevator up from the ground. Water goes up and sugar goes down. Stem, stem... stem, stem, stem! Leaf, leaf...leaf, leaf, leaf! From carbon dioxide, water, and sun, The LEAF makes sugar and oxygen. Leaf, leaf...leaf, leaf, leaf! Flower, flower...flower, flower, flower! The FLOWER is dressed so beautifully. It holds the pollen and attracts the bee. Flower, flower...flower, flower, flower! Fruit, fruit...fruit, fruit, fruit! A FRUIT is a grown up ovary, With seeds inside kept safe as can be Fruit, fruit...fruit, fruit, fruit! Seed, seed...seed, seed, seed! The SEED holds life: it falls to earth. It sprouts. It grows. It's a new plant's birth. Seed, seed...seed, seed, seed! We searched in the GARDEN for the different types of plants that PEOPLE EAT... ROOTS: carrots, radishes, beets, sweet potatoes, turnips, onion STEMS: celery, asparagus FLOWERS: cauliflower, broccoli SEEDS: corn, peas, FRUIT: eggplant, squash, tomatoes, cucumber LEAVES: lettuce, cabbage, spinach We were LEAF PEEPERS (from a Scholastic News article that we read) while we hiked at Wittenbach. We had to chose leaves for our LEAF PRINTING PROJECT. The chlorophyll is released from the leaf and absorbed by the fabric. The leaves are holding the color inside, kind of like a water balloon. When those balloons are hit, they break and the color comes out onto the fabric. Here are our 2nd grade Standards for SCIENCE for plants/animals:
-Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow. -Develop a simple model that mimics the function of an animal in dispersing seeds or pollinating plants. -Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.
